Handcarding and Woolen Spinning

Class Time: 9 am - 12 pm

If you have struggled with hand carding, join me as you learn a simple technique to use handcards.

Class Objectives:

  • Learn what fibers are appropriate to handcard.

  • Use and experience a variety of fibers from different breeds of sheep.

  • Create a number of rolags and then spin them to learn woolen spinning.

We will discuss what woolen spinning is compared to worsted spinning. With practice, this technique will become a favorite method of fiber preparation.

Class Details

Minimum Age: 15 years

Skills Required: Some spinning experience—must be able to spin: This is NOT a beginning spinning class

Materials Fee, paid to instructor: $30 —includes a variety of wool from an array of sheep breeds

Instructor will bring:

  • Handouts to take home

  • Examples & Reference books (for use in class)

Students should bring:

  • Handcards

  • Spinning wheel in good working order

about Carol Wagner

My husband and I own Hidden Valley Woolen Mill near Valders, Wisconsin. We offer custom carding services for roving and quilt batts. Reconditioning old/used quilt batts is a speciality.

We are also shepherds, raising Coopworth, Corriedale and CVM sheep. Our fiber is processed by us into approximately 50 colorways. Some of the fiber is spun into yarn which we custom dye. We direct market our fiber at events across the midwest.

I have been a spinner since 1988. I have completed Level 1 of the Olds College Master Spinner Program and would have finished Level 2 if the pandemic hadn't interfered. I am very interested in drum carding and hand carding. Both are wonderful techniques to prepare fiber for spinning.
