Intermediate Wheel Spinning CPR

Class Time: 1 to 4 pm

In this intermediate class we will address:

Consistency
Hows and whys of creating the yarn you want:
- Adjusting your wheel for a comfortable ratio
- Ways to measure your yarn (TPI, WPI, balanced yarn)
- Adjusting your drafting for the type of fiber you are using (over the fold, short draw, supported long draw)

And we will address Plying:

Andean
2 and 3 ply from bobbins
Chain

We’ll do as much repetition as time allows. The goal is thoughtful practice to establish new techniques.

You will be sent home with a class outline including homework!

Class Details

Minimum Age: 14 years or over
—younger children can attend when accompanied by an adult: two material kits will be required

Skills Required: spinning experience
—This class will build on the beginning skills students already have

Materials Fee, paid to instructor: $10

Romney Roving
Leader yarn
WPI tool
Class outline

Students will bring:

Working spinning wheel (wheels are not provided)
Extra bobbins, if you have them
Lazy Kate
Small niddy-noddy
Spinning chair (or a cushion for the inevitable folding chair!).
Any animal fiber you have dreams of spinning

about Kim Specht

I live on a farm near Prairieburg, Iowa. I’m retired from teaching music in the public schools, but I’m still teaching private piano lessons and helping with music in the community.
I love to knit, spin, felt, and weave. My favorite is whatever I’m working on at the time!
I've had a small flock of Romney sheep for over twenty years, always breeding for healthy sheep and beautiful fleece. My fleeces have won awards at festivals in six states. At these festivals, I regularly attend classes taught by nationally known artists.
My classes are planned and organized, including scaffolded learning experiences and end-of-class goals. I plan for time to answer questions yet keep things moving with a sense of humor. I love combining my love of teaching and the fiber arts.
